Fluid Labels: UpNext iPad App

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Today we launched our new iPad app with Fluid Labels. Watch the video above to see how the new label system works.

You can see the label system is now optimized for the iPad size. When you perform a search, multiple results populate the screen. As you move around the map, the results, smartly, refresh to give you more venues.

Try out a category search or try using the Foursquare Friends Checkins to really see the labels in action.

There are a couple more changes in this version. The Venue Info window has been enlarged and reformatted. Editorial and user reviews are now spread out and presented in an elegant layout. Play around and try out the app for yourself.

Foursquare App Gallery

Definitely some cool app are being built on their platform. And with their continued wildfire growth (600,000 checkins per day!!!), the apps being built will just become richer and richer.

Just to point out some of the cool things we are doing with their API.
- See all the places you checked in on our map (a visual history)
- See where your friends have checked in (friend finder)
- See what venues are trending (easy way to see what’s hot in your city)

We are working on some more cool stuff so stay tuned.

Lots of new things to announce here at UpNext. The latest version in now live in the iTunes App Store. Here are the highlights of what’s new.

1) Expansion to more cities

UpNext is now live in New York City, Boston and Washington DC. Explore these cities on UpNext, quickly and easily. More cities are on the way soon.

(Cities are found under, MY PLACES –> CITIES)

2) Foursquare Integration

You can now see Foursquare data on UpNext in 3 ways. First, see your own checkins on the map. Next, see where your friends have checked in. Last, see Trending Venues and how many people have checked in to that location.

(Foursquare features are under the UpNext Feeds, located at the bottom right of the map, the rss looking button.)

3) SXSW and UpNext

Austin, TX will be live a couple days before SXSW. We are just putting the finishing touches on it. Will update on our blog once it is live. Or check CITIES under MY PLACES in a couple days.

Keep in mind, much of UpNext works offline. So if you have bad or poor reception, it can be a handy tool to have.

The UpNext team will be attending SXSWi so let us know if you want to meet up. Try us on Twitter: @upnext or email: dmoon [at] upnext [dot] com

Check out the video demo below to see UpNext in action, then download the app for FREE from iTunes.

SXSW Interactive (www.sxsw.com)

SXSW is less than a month away. We have some exciting things planned for Austin and SXSW here at UpNext. Details coming soon.

Also, we will be attending SXSW Interactive this year. Our first trip was in 2008 and it was a blast. Looking forward to making it back in 2010 and meeting new people.

Let us know if you are interested in meeting up to chat or grab a drink. We love the sessions but its the people that really make SXSW worthwhile.

Shoot me an email dmoon [at] upnext [dot] com if you are going to be in Austin for SXSW.

Feature Refresher: My Places

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I was out last night with a friend who frequently uses UpNext on his iPhone. He expressed his enthusiam for the app but had some additional feature requests. What surprised me was that the features he requested were already in the application and he just did not realize it. So periodically, we will post a refresher on some existing features that will help you better use the application. First up…

MY PLACES

My Places is found on the bottom of the home screen next to Categories. From there you have 5 options

1) Rated - see all the places you have rated

2) Favorites - see all the places you have favorited

3) Marked - see all the places you have marked (remember, bookmarks are private and not shared with the UpNext community)

4) Community - see the most favorited and highest rated venues based on the UpNext community. We aggregate everyone’s inputs and show the top places in each neighborhood.

5) Account - Here you have the ability to create an account, log into your account, log in with Facebook Connect

My Places is an easy way to bring up your favorite places and to see what other places UpNext users are talking about. If you use UpNext as your personal city guide, My Places is the best way to see those places you have been, want to go or need to share.

Why Buy Local

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

One of the reasons we created UpNext was to help people discover great local businesses in NYC. The neighborhood cheese shop, the local art gallery, the mom and pop diner, are all example of things we think make this city great. But there is also a financial incentive to shop locally.

Why Buy Local (via PSFK)

Spending your dollars at locally-owned businesses bring more money to local communities. A larger percentage of your dollars are returned to the neighborhood to provide greater services.

In addition to the fantastic graphic above, Local First gives 10 reasons to shop local first. Read through the list and see if it makes sense for you.

Our friends at Citysquares, created The Buy Local Challenge last June. For a month, they did their best to buy only from locally owned businesses. Why not give it a try yourself for a week? You will be surprised how easy it can be and how many new businesses you will discover that offer good and services on par or better than the national chains.
